How to Pest Proof Your Home This Spring
While spring brings gorgeous blooms and greener landscapes, unwanted pests are also on the rise. Many people turn to exterminators to help, but that doesn’t always fix the root of pest problems — These simple steps could keep your home rid of bugs more effectively this spring and summer.
Look for openings that need to be sealed. Check your home for cracks and gaps, both inside and out. Common places for these to form are where pipes exit through a wall, laundry vents, exterior outlets and utility meters.
Keep your kitchen clean. Unwanted pests are attracted to crumbs of leftover food, so it’s imperative that you keep your kitchen clean in the spring and summer. Wipe down counters after cooking and be sure that there are no sugar spills by your coffee maker. Food should be stored in lidded containers.
Try to maintain a dry home. Damp environments can be the perfect place for insects to breed. Reduce humidity and wet spots where you can, and consider adding an extra layer of caulk to fix any leaks you have in the bathroom around sinks and tubs.
Landscape regularly and clean up the clippings. Be sure your landscaping is free of potentially dangerous nests and don’t let your plants get too overgrown to where they can become a home for unwanted vermin and reptiles. If you landscape, get rid of the extra grass clippings, leaves and twigs by placing them in trash bags or bins.
Keep your pets’ dining area clean. Pet food can sometimes get strewn about the house, leading to the possibility of attracting ants. Place your pet’s food bowls on a rubber mat and be sure to pick up any stray pieces of food!
