10 Smart Tips for Settling Into Your New Home

10 Smart Tips for Settling Into Your New Home

Moving is about far more than getting your boxes from one location to the other, as any homeowner knows. Packing and unpacking can take up the majority of your thoughts when getting from point A to point B, but there are a few things to do when moving to help yourself quickly settle into your new environment.

Unpack as soon as you can. The sooner you unpack boxes and remove the excess waste from your home, the sooner you’ll feel settled. By creating an environment that’s familiar to you, you’ll be able to focus on enjoying your new surroundings.

Add a touch of personal style. After unpacking, add a few cozy touches that will warm up your space and make it feel relaxed. Whether you have a large budget for decorating or are doing the best with what you have, infusing your home with elements that reflect your personal style will make the home feel more like your own.

Change your address. Make sure you don’t miss any mail! Visit your local post office or go to the USPS website to fill out the form electronically to change your address and begin mail forwarding at a certain date.

Transfer utility and internet services. Change your electric, gas, water, cable, internet and phone bills to your new address. Most utility companies have a way you can sign up for a service or transfer your existing service online, so talk to your provider about the best way to do so.

Install or update security features. If you aren’t moving into a new build, make sure to have the locks changed in case the previous owners’ friends and family have copies of the old keys. Install a security system if there isn’t already one in place, and be sure that all safety devices are accessible and in working order.

Meet your neighbors. You’ll be seeing these faces on a regular basis and your neighbors will also be able to help look after your house when you’re away. Be sure to start things off on the right foot!

Review HOA rules. While HOA rules should have been reviewed prior to purchasing your home, it’s a great idea to refresh your memory and review them once more upon move-in—especially if you’re wanting to update your property.

Celebrate your move with a housewarming get-together. If you thrive under deadlines, sending out an invite to friends and family for a housewarming party can be just what you need to get your unpacking and other move-in goals accomplished. Sharing quality time with the people you love is a great way to make the space feel more like a home!

Explore the area. If you’re a stranger to your new location, don’t hesitate to ask your realtor for a few recommendations about what to do in the area! They’ll be able to tell you what locals enjoy, or share resources from their brokerage. Write down a few things that spark your interest and create a bucket list for yourself!

Develop a new routine. Moving to a new area means access to new amenities, new roads and new acquaintances. Settle into a new routine that makes the most of your location, whether it be adding in a workout class from a studio down the street, adjusting your commute or attending community events to meet new faces.
