Opening 2019: Austin Building Developments to Watch
There’s a reason some people say the crane is Austin’s unofficial city mascot -- It seems like new construction is popping up each and every day in the city. This year, expect a rapid increase in the openings of new hotels, the renovation and reimagining of some landmark spaces and even more development East of I-35.
Replacing beloved Graffiti Park, which will be relocated to a ranch near the airport, is a slew of luxury condos overlooking the skyline. A rooftop pool boasts the perfect spot to watch the light reflecting off Austin high-rises! The Alterstudio building, currently known as 1012 Baylor, will pay homage to Graffiti Park in some design elements.
One of the most buzzed-about construction projects in Austin will finally open in 2019. Plaza Saltillo, which sits just of I-35 nestled between East 4th and 5th Streets, is set to be the home of the East Side’s very first Whole Foods along with additional retail, office and living spaces on-site.
Austin-American Statesman Lot
The 19-acre Austin American-Statesman lot is one of the largest infill projects to sit on the outskirts of downtown. Endeavor Real Estate Group was recently named the master developer for the site, which will be revamped into a mixed-use development including offices, homes shops and potentially a new hotel.
Hotel ZaZa Austin
After a generally mysterious construction timeline and plenty of delays, it looks like the cranes are finally down at 401 Guadalupe Street. The funky Hotel Zaza Austin is set to open in summer 2019 offering everything from their famed Magnificent Seven Suites and Concept Suites to an intricate speakeasy-style bar and enchanting hotel restaurant.
St. Elmo Public Market
Similar to Pike Place Market in Seattle, St. Elmo Public Market will be the first of its kind in Austin. After four years of planning, the $250 million development is growing in leaps and bounds with space for a retail marketplace, hotel, apartments and creative office space sitting on its 12.5 acres.
Liz Lambert, who helped revitalize South Congress with Hotel San José, has an exciting new SoCo project! Magdalena Hotel is set to open in fall 2019 and will feature seven condos for sale on top of the building. Lake Flato is designing the property, which will be the first mass timber boutique hotel in North America and feature three separate buildings brought together by a pool and courtyard area.
The first boutique hotel to grace the East Side since Eleven, Arrive is a $17.4 million project designed by Austin architect Burton Baldridge and set to open in spring 2019. The trendy space will sit on the corner of 6th and Chicon in the heart of the East Sixth bar and restaurant scene, with its own restaurant/bar and retail spaces.
This East Riverside development will be the crossroads of 375 apartments, 100,000 square feet of office space and 20,000 square feet of retail, elevating living in the area which has traditionally been known as one of the most affordable places to live just outside the city. Urban East will be one of the first in Austin in a federally-designated Opportunity Zone, which will offer a slew of tax benefits for the developers.
Austin Mariott Downtown
Another 600 plus hotel rooms will be added to the Austin hospitality scene with the construction of the Austin Marriott Downtown across from the convention center and Fairmont Hotel. Planned to open in 2020, the hotel will feature a rooftop pool, three bars, a handful of locally-inspired restaurants and over 60,000 square feet of meeting space.
